In keeping with the conditions of building in the North, regionalism in Canadian architecture is an important aspect of the country’s diversity. 'Regionalism' may be defined in traditional geographical terms, such as 'the North' or 'the Maritimes', in terms of identity, such as 'Aboriginal' or 'Roman Catholic', in technological terms, such as engineering, construction technology, or 'green architecture', or in regional stylistic terms, such as vernacular (historical, geographical and/or social contexts) or other forms of hybrid manifestations. Topics will include: defining regionalism, critical regionalism, environmental architecture, sustainable development, traditional building, adaptive re-use, ethnicity and the environment, or migration and settlement. Conference tours will profile the historical and contemporary architecture of Yellowknife and its surroundings. | |
